Infrastructure
The Town of Grundy is strategically located in the Southwest Virginia region, midway between Atlanta-Pittsburgh, Charlotte-Cincinnati and Richmond-Louisville and is within a day’s drive of more than half the U.S. population.
Grundy is close to the borders of both Kentucky and West Virginia, providing additional workforce capabilities through a mobile workforce used to commuting. Roads
U.S. Routes 460 and 83 are the primary road arteries running through the Town of Grundy. With road projects currently underway, in future years, the town will also have a connection to the long-awaited Coalfields Expressway route (U.S. 121) which will significantly reduce travel times and provide better interstate connectivity throughout the region by linking Interstates 64 and 77 in West Virginia with Route 23 in Virginia, which links to interstates in Kentucky and Tennessee. The first 2.57 miles of that new route opened in 2023.
Breaks Regional Airport
Breaks Regional Airport is currently under construction. The airport is a replacement airport for the Grundy Municipal Airport. When complete, it will feature an almost mile-long runway, improving air access to the region.
Tri-Cities Airport
Tri-Cities Airport is the commercial airport serving the region. Information may be found at www.triflight.com.
Rail
Norfolk Southern Railway (www.nscorp.com) operates freight service in Buchanan County and through the Town of Grundy.
Internet/Broadband
High Speed Internet options are available throughout the town and county. Broadband services are available from a number of providers including iGo Technology; Point Broadband; Verizon; and Spectrum.
Electric Service
Appalachian Power Company (APCO), a division of American Electric Power, provides electric service in the Town of Grundy. www.appalachianpower.com.
Telephone/Cell Service
Telephone and cell service are available from a variety of providers including Verizon and Spectrum for traditional landlines and Verizon, AT&T and others for cell phones. A local Verizon dealer operates in the Grundy Town Center.
Fire Department
The Grundy Fire Department consists of 25 volunteers, one paid fireman and provides emergency response 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The fire department has a state-of-the-art facility located at 23824 Riverside Drive, west of Grundy, that was completed in 2008.
Law Enforcement
The Grundy Police Department is located on Route 460 on the west end of town. The Police Department is the lead law enforcement agency serving the Town of Grundy. The Buchanan County Sheriff's Department and the Virginia State Police provide additional support as needed. The Police Department is a participant with the Regional Drug Task Force. The dispatcher for the Buchanan County Sheriff's Department serves as the 911 dispatcher for the Grundy Police Department. Most calls are handled by the town without the need for assistance, however all departments of law enforcement work together in the region.
The Grundy Police Department first earned full accreditation with the Virginia Law Enforcement Standards Commission in 2017.
Public Works
The Town of Grundy operates a full-service Public Works Department. It provides various services for the town which include street maintenance, garbage collection, tree/brush collection, snow removal, curb repair, general building maintenance and maintenance of the various vehicles and equipment belonging to the town.

The Town of Grundy is governed by an elected Mayor and six-member Town Council, the legislative body responsible for adopting all ordinances and resolutions, approving the annual operating and capital budgets, setting all tax rates, approving capital improvements, setting all user fees, making land use decisions and establishing long range plans and policies. The council meets monthly on the second Tuesday of each month.
